History Project Overview

 Montana History Website!

Our Montana History trip is one part of a three-part educational process that all eighth graders at Central School have the opportunity to experience.

The first component of this is a semester of Montana History Study taught by our History Department to all eighth grade students.  Students learn about the unique events that occurred during the settlement of Montana, including the struggle between Native and non-Native peoples, the rough and tumble days of the early west, the coming of railroads and other industry to the state, and many other related topics.

The second component of the experience is completion of an intensive research project on a Montana history topic, strongly related to one of the historical sites we will visit.  This project is carefully guided and structured in a step-by-step process to the final completion of an academic research report.  Teachers in both the History and English Departments teach and jointly schedule the project, involving research skills, location of information on internet and in print sources, planning and organization of material, and finally the use of computer labs and sophisticated word processing features to draft, revise and publish a thorough report.  Outstanding examples of these reports will be posted on this web site as they are completed.

The third component involves an exciting four-day field trip, introducing students to the actual places, artifacts and artwork they have studied in class, including the ones they focus attention on for their various report topics.  Numerous important historical sites from Montana are visited, and students gain an experiential hands-on connection to the important people, places and events that formed our Big Sky State.  Our new website will upgrade and publish both photos and student news reports on each day of the trip this year--look for them by 7 or 8 pm of each day of the trip!

We encourage all parents to log on to check out the progress of the the trip Daily.  Computers are available in Central School Library, Whitefish High School Library, Muldown Library, and the Whitefish Public Library for those who don’t have an internet connection directly available.
