The Trustees of Whitefish School District No. 44 and High School met for their monthly work session on March 23, 2004 in the Whitefish High School Library.

 

Members Present:         Chairperson Linda Maetzold, Dave Fern, Brian Lauterbach, Doug Rhodes, Phil Mitchell (7:05 p.m.), Pat Jarvi, and David Kauffman.

 

Members Absent:          None.

 

Officials Present:           Superintendent Jerry House and District Clerk Danelle Reisch.

 

Call to Order

Chairperson Maetzold called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

 

Review/Revision to Agenda

There were no changes.

 

Public Comment

There was none.

 

Speak Up Whitefish

Superintendent House presented the following information regarding the Speak Up Whitefish project.  He reviewed the process including Phase I, the process of the study circles and the action ideas for presentation.  Phase II will include board discussion of the action ideas from the study circles, centering on common themes and ideas to develop an action plan during the board’s strategic planning process.  Phase III includes the development of final board action plans to include a timeline and who is responsible for planned implementation.

 

The board action will include the following:

    • Strategic Planning
    • Governance – Policies
    • Administrative Directives

 

The board will review the action ideas from the study circles by considering the following topics at its upcoming work sessions:

·         April – Instruction

·          May – student achievement, empowering students

·          June – teacher related

·          July – community involvement, NCLB and funding.

 

Budget Discussion

Superintendent House provided information about the Elementary Budget, the High School Budget and the administration’s levy request.  He presented possible budget reductions in the elementary district, as well as potential high school budget reductions in case of a levy failure.  He also presented the administrative recommendation for a $172,352 high school levy.  Phil Mitchell express concern about the size of the levy and indicated he would like it to be closer to $100,000.

 

Instructional Materials – English

Superintendent House provided information about the need for English Anthologies at Whitefish High School.  The materials are available in the District Office for review and adoption will be placed on the April business meeting agenda.

Pat Jarvi moved to adjourn the meeting at 8:25 p.m. David Kauffman seconded the motion and it carried unanimously.

At 8:26 p.m., Chairperson Maetzold called the special meeting to order.

Levy Election Approval

Superintendent House requested approval of Resolution No. 10 asking for a Whitefish High School levy of $172,352.  David Kauffman moved to approve Resolution No. 10 calling for a Whitefish High School levy of $172,352.  Pat Jarvi seconded the motion and it carried 6 –1, with Rhodes, Jarvi, Maetzold, Fern, Lauterbach and Kauffman in favor and Mitchell opposed.

 

Adjourn Special Meeting

David Kauffman moved to adjourn the meeting at 8:30 p.m. Dave Fern seconded the motion and it carried unanimously.
